He talked with members of the media following a 90-minute workout that featured running, catch and taking some swings against the pitching machine.
When asked to pick out one Chinese character that would best describe what he wants to accomplish this year, Otani used the kanji that is used in his first name, “Sho,” a combination of the symbols for sheep and wings.
“This is the year of the sheep, and sho means to fly to new heights, so I’m putting wings on a sheep,” he cracked.
The second-year player didn’t seem satisfied with last season.
As he discussed his outlook for this year, he emphasized the word “continuation.”
